📜 Historical Background

Clappana was originally part of the former Ochira Village Union and later came under Ochira Panchayat. The Government of Kerala officially formed Clappana Grama Panchayat on 26 December 1961, and administrative functions began on 1 January 1962. Over time, Clappana became part of the Karunagappally Assembly constituency and developed into an independent local self-government institution.

🌾 Agriculture & Water Resources

Located in the Onattukara region of Kollam district, Clappana has traditionally depended on agriculture, especially paddy cultivation. The western region includes the historic Ochira Mundakappadam. Although groundwater is available at shallow depth, access to clean drinking water remains limited due to salinity and iron content. Conservation of natural water channels remains important for environmental sustainability.

🏥 Health Services

Clappana has a rich heritage in traditional Ayurvedic and indigenous medical practices. Several renowned physicians contributed to healthcare development. Modern healthcare services later expanded through the establishment of a public hospital, which was upgraded as the Primary Health Centre in 1988.

🏭 Industry & Infrastructure

Traditional industries including coir production, agriculture-based enterprises, weaving, dairy activities, and small-scale manufacturing shaped the local economy. Transport infrastructure gradually improved from limited roads in the early years to an extensive road network connecting all wards.

🎓 Education & Culture

Clappana has a long educational tradition with several schools having decades of history. Shanmukha Vilasam School evolved into the Panchayat’s only high school and is well known for its unique open portrait gallery displaying hundreds of notable personalities across literature, science, culture, and public life.
